Dr. C. Macris was born in 1913 and he passed away in 2004. He obtained his undergrad degree in Physics from the University of Athens (1937) and his PhD in Solar Physics from the same University under the co-supervision of Prof. Plakidis and Bernard Lyot in 1951. He had worked at the Meudon Observatory, Paris, France, at the College of France and at the Arcetri Observatory, Italy. He published several papers on Solar Physics, planet physics, planet atmospheres etc, 4 textbooks and 2 books. He was a researcher at the National Observatory of Athens as well as at the Research Center for Astronomy and Applied Mathematics of the Academy of Athens, Greece. After his retirement he served as the director of the Astronomical Institute of the National Observatory of Athens (1983-1994). He had been honored with the Medal of the Polish Government on the 500 years of Copernicus (1973) and with the first award of the Empirician Foundation (1979).
