He returned to Cambridge in 1946 and, in the Cavendish Laboratory, began a collaboration with Max Perutz, under the direction of Sir Lawrence Bragg. He took his Ph.D. degree in 1949 and his Sc.D. in I962
The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 1962 was awarded jointly to Max Ferdinand Perutz and John Cowdery Kendrew "for their studies of the structures of globular proteins"
