Background: Son of Balthasar Christian Mangold (1674-1738, Erfurt), deacon of the Barfüsser Church of Erfurt, Lutheran
Education: After attending Erfurt's Barfüsser School and Town Council Gymnasium, he studied the philosophical and medical sciences at Erfurt University from 1734 to 1737. Then he proceeded to Jena University where, in conjunction with his medical studies, he took chemistry from G.E. Hamberger, H.F. Teichmeyer, and G.A. Fuchs. While there, he also worked with the alchemist R.J.F. Schmid. In the early 1740s, he returned to Erfurt University for further medical study.
