1860-1919. Had early career in Marine Hospital Service in New York (Staten Island), San Francisco and Washington, D.C. He was the founder and Director of U.S. Hygienic Laboratory in 1887-99, the precursor to the National Institutes of Health. Was Professor at George Washington University. Was President of the American Society of Bacteriology in 1909. Invented a sterilization device.
