After obtaining his Ph.D., Thomas Baron stayed on at Illinois as an instructor and then assistant professor, graduating four master's degree students. In 1951, Baron joined the Shell Development Company, and in 1981, retired as president of the company. Some of the awards he received in his 30-year career with Shell were the Alan P. Colburn Award and the Professional Progress Award from the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. Baron made significant contributions to chemical engineering theory and practice in fluid dynamics.
