1922-2010. Undergraduate study and Ph.D. in biochemistry at University of Chicago. Studied anthrax at Fort Detrick briefly and then returned to University of Chicago, where he spent his career. Best known for discovering erythropoietin in 1977 after 15 years of research. Retired in 2002.
