Born Nov. 29, 1940, a son of Linus and Leola Goedken, he graduated from Lamont [IA] High School. He graduated from Upper Iowa University in 1963 with a B.S. degree and continued his education at Florida State University where he received his Ph.D. in 1968. From 1968 to 1970, he was a research fellow at Ohio State University. He served on the University of Chicago faculty from 1970 to 1975.

From 1976 until his death, he had served on the Florida State University faculty as professor of chemistry, specializing in inorganic chemistry and crystallography. He had written numerous publications of transition metal chemistry.

Dr. Goedken was a member of the American Chemical Society, Chemical Society (London), American Association for t he Advancement of Science and served on the Board of Directors of Big Bend C.A.R.E.S.
