PhD in 1912 from University of Freiberg. Fought in WWI, leading to leg injuries; read Darwin's Origin of Species while he convalesced. Appointed Prof. of Forest Botany at the Faculty of Forestry Baden, part of the University of Freiburg in 1927. Rawitscher was of Jewish descent and fled Germany in 1930 when invited to be faculty at USP by Teodoro Augusto Ramos. Arrived in Brazil on June 30, 1934 alongside professors Ernst Bresslau and Heinrich Rheinboldt. Founded the Botany Bulletin and was an expert in tropical ecology.
