Van Doeveren was an early proponent of smallpox inoculation. In 1774 he personally inoculated Prince Willem Frederik, the later King Willem I of the Netherlands, using variola inoculation, at the request of his tutor Gaubius who was personal physician of Prince Willem V . This was more than 20 years before Edward Jenner popularized cow-pox vaccine in England.
