1735-1819. English physician who improved and simplified his father's method of smallpox inoculation, allowing the practice to spread rapidly. Opened partnerships in many regions of the world. The practice of using smallpox itself was replaced by vaccination in Europe beginning only at the end of the eighteenth century.
