1941-. Developed drugs for herpes simplex virus and other herpesviruses including valacyclovir and cidofovir and for HIV, including the reverse transcriptase inhibitors stavudine and tenofovir. Also studied and helped to elucidate the primary structure of interferon in the 1970s and the development of recombinant human beta-interferon in 1980 with collaborators.
