Graduated from James Millikan University in 1917 and joined the faculty at the University of Chicago in 1920. He served on the Rockefeller West African Yellow Fever Commission starting in 1925. He performed studies on Yellow Fever vaccine as it was being developed, in particular demonstrating that rhesus monkeys developed similar symptoms to those of humans when infected with the virus, making them a good animal model for study. He was recruited to the Ohio State University and served as the Chair of the Department of Microbiology from 1935 to 1950. He retired in 1957 and died in Florida at the age of 98.
