Abraham de Vries was Mennonite pastor in Haarlem. He and his brother Jeronimo were accomplished scholars in history and classical literature. In 1820 Abraham was actually offered a professorship in Leiden, but he declined. Instead he was awarded a honorary Dr. Lit. Hum. degree in Leiden (1822).
