Athanasios Papoulis was born in İzmir, Turkey in 1921. He received his B.A. in Mathematics from National Technical University of Athens, and later studied under the supervision of John Robert Kline at the University of Pennsylvania where he earned his Ph.D. in Mathematics in 1950. His dissertation was titled "On the Strong Differentiation of the Indefinite Integral." He was a professor of Electrical Engineering at Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn. He died in April 25, 2002.
