Professors E.E. Salpeter and T. Gold, chairman and member of my special committee, have contributed valuable discussions -- especially notable are the several occasions on which they have noted details which had not even begun to occur to me, and by which embarrassing errors were narrowly averted. Similarly invaluable were many discussions with Dr. W.H. Tucker on physical processes and the Crab Nebula; he provided me with unpublished estimates of some of the most necessary physical parameters listed in Part I. Professor J.N. Bahcall suggested and helped with the problem of the line-excitation mechanism discussed in Part III.
