The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 1986 was awarded jointly to Dudley R. Herschbach, Yuan T. Lee and John C. Polanyi "for their contributions concerning the dynamics of chemical elementary processes".
The Wolf Prize in Chemistry for 1982 was awarded jointly to George C. Pimentel “for development of matrix isolation spectroscopy and for the discovery of photodissociation lasers and chemical lasers,” and John C. Polanyi "for his studies of chemical reactions in unprecedented detail through development of the infrared chemiluminescence technique, and for envisaging the principles underlying the chemical laser."
