Stratingh was an inventor, in particular in the area of propulsion. Stratingh was likely the first person in the Netherlands to drive a motor vehicle (equipped with a steam engine). This happened as early as March 22, 1834, when he and his assistant, German instrument builder Christopher Becker, made the first motorcar trip through the streets of Groningen. On November 3, 1835 he made a second trip, from Groningen to De Punt (a distance of about 14 miles).
