Louis R. Maxwell, Sr., was born in WaterIoo, Iowa, on May 28, 1900. He graduated in 1923 from Cornell College, Mt. Vernon. Iowa, with a B.A. in physics. He received his Ph.D. in physics from the University of Minnesota in 1927. He was awardcd a National Research Fellowship and a Barton Research Foundation Fellowship in physics in 1927-1931.
