George M. Guthrie was born in Paris, Ontario
in Canada on September 3, 1924. Following
graduation from the University of Western
Ontario in 1946, he went on to complete the
Ph.D. in clinical psychology in 1949 at the
University of Minnesota, where Paul Meehl
was his supervisor. He then became a member
of the psychology faculty at Pennsylvania State
University, where he remained until he retired
and became professor emeritus in 1988.
Supported by a Fulbright Fellowship, Guthrie
visited the Philippines in 1959. Although he
was to return many times to the Philippines, his
experience on this first visit made him aware of
the difficulties inherent in the attempt to apply
Western theoretical and methodological views
to the circumstances of non-Western cultures
(Guthrie, 1979 ; Marsella, 2004 ). Following two
