In 1847 Boogaard was awarded his M.D. in Leiden, after defending a dissertation titled Dissertatio de renum in morbo Brightii structura penitiori. In his thesis Boogaard specifically acknowledges Dr. Carl Gobée (1804-1875) for instruction in using the microscope. Afterward he made a grand tour, visiting Berlin, Prague, Vienna, and Heidelberg
