Professor (retired), University of Patras, Greece (1981-2014), and Director, Institute of Astronomy and Astrophysics, National Observatory of Athens, Greece (2001-2011). He was born in Piraeus, Greece, on 15th of April 1947. He got his B.Sc. in physics from the University of Athens, Greece (1969), the M.Sc. from the University of Manchester, U.K. (1972) and his Ph.D. from the same University. He worked as a Researcher at the Department of Physics and Astrophysics at the University of Manchester (1974-1979) and at the Max-Planck-Institut für Astronomie (1979-1981). He also served as Director of the Institute of Astronomy and Astrophysics of the National Observatory of Athens (2001-2012). He has published many special volumes as well as 13 textbooks on Astrophysics and many books on popular Astronomy.
