Emeritus Professor, University of Athens, Greece. He was born in Piraeus, Greece on the 4th of June, 1920 and passed away on July 16, 2018. He received his B.Sc. in Physics from the University of Athens, Greece (1943) and continued his BSc studies at the University of Exester (1951). He performed the research for his thesis dissertation on the Classical Cepheids at Lick Observatory under the supervisor of Prof. Gerald E. Kron and was awarded his Ph.D. from the University of Athens, Greece in 1959. He worked as Laboratory assistant at the National Observatory of Athens (1945-53), as Research Fellow at the University of Pennsylvania, U.S.A. (1954-55) under the supervision of Prof. Frank B. Wood, at the Lick Observatory (1956-1960), at the University of Texas (1960-62) and at the University of Arizona (1962-63) under the supervision of Prof. Harold L. Johnson, as well as in Basel (1964-65) and in Hamburg, Germany (1965). He was named Docent of Astronomy at the University of Athens, Greece (1966) and worked at the same year as an Astronomer at the National Observatory of Athens before being elected as Professor of Astronomy at the University of Ioannina, Greece, where he worked for six years (1967-73). He became a Professor of Astrophysics at the University of Athens in 1973. He retired and became Emeritus Professor in 1986. He has served as Chairman of the Mathematics Department of the University of Ioannina, Director of the Section of Astrophysics, Astronomy and Mechanics as well Director of the Laboratory of Astrophysics at the Department of Physics, Univerisity of Athens. His scientific interests included the Galaxy (Rotation, Stellar Fields and Open Clusters), UBV, RGV and multicolor stellar photometry, Absolute Luminosity of Cepheid, Ecliptic Binaries, Stellar Spectroscopy and Spectrophotometry of Be-stars.
