Stanley was born at home on December 20, 1930, to Henry and Frieda (Kaempf) Sobottka in Plum City, WI. The third of nine children, Stanley grew up on his family farm in Plum City. He graduated from Ellsworth High School, WI, in 1948. He served in the Navy during the Korean War as an Aviation Electronics Technician First Class from 1948-1952. He then majored in Physics at University of Wisconsin, Madison and graduated from that institution within 33 months in 1955. He next attended Stanford University, where he obtained his Master's and then his PhD in Physics in 1960.
