BS in Zoology and Biochemistry from University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa, 1976.
PhD in Zoology working with Hugh E. H. Paterson, University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa, 1982, working on mating behavior of damselflies and Drosophila.
First postdoc with Jack P. Hailman in Department of Zoology, University of Wisconsin at Madison, 1982-1985, working on mating behavior of damselflies and Drosophila.
Second postdoc with William R. Engels in Department of Genetics, University of Wisconsin, Madison, 1985-1987, working on P elements in Drosophila melanogaster.
Assistant, Associate, and Full Professor in the Department of Entomology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 1987-present, working on Wolbachia infections of insects, mariner and other insect transposons, then chemoreceptors in insects, and now insect genomics.
