Born in Germany and immigrated the U.S. in 1936 after studying at Heidelberg. Spent 45 years at the University of Pennsylvania with his wife, Gertrude Henle. Discovered the association of EBV and Burkitt's lymphoma and was a pioneer in viral oncology. Worked on diagnostic test for mumps and on various vaccines. Retired in 1982 as the Director of the Virus Diagnostic Laboratory at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. Grandson of Jacob Henle.
