Franchimont was educated as pharmacist in Leiden and The Hague, and in 1864 established an independent pharmacy in Leiden. In 1868 he passed the admission exams for University and enrolled in Leiden to study natural sciences. He was awarded his PhD on March 24, 1871 with a thesis "Bijdrage tot de kennis van het ontstaan en de chemische constitutie der zoogenaamde terpeenharsen". His advisor was A.H. van der Boon Mesch. In the mean time he had sold his pharmacy in 1869 and taught chemistry at the night school of the society Mathesis Scientiarum Genitrix in Leiden. After graduation he worked some time as private assistant of A. Kekulé in Bonn and of A. Wurtz in Paris. After he returned in 1873 he taught chemistry at the high school in Wageningen. In 1874 followed his appointment as professor of organic chemistry in Leiden as successor of Van der Boon Mesch
