Kurt Heyns doctorate at age 23 Dr. rer. nat. 1932 in Halle (Saale) with Emil Abderhalden on the theme 'studies on the substances resulting from the hydrolysis of proteins degradation products'. In addition, he had also studied music and passed a concert exam. Abderhalden suggested Heyns before a university career, so it was from 1932 to 1937 senior assistant at Abderhalden in Halle. An ill-considered policy statement ended provisionally his university career and he had thereupon 1937-1948 working as an industrial chemist at Merck and cornflour. With the theme 'About oxidative conversions in the chemistry of carbohydrates, with special consideration of the synthesis of vitamin C', he succeeded then, however, his habilitation in 1942 in Hamburg. From 1948 to 1978 he did research and taught there as a professor of organic chemistry. For many years he was head of the student union and Hamburg 1956-1968 President of the Joachim-Jungius Society of Sciences.
