Currently the Academic Vice President of Academia Sinica in Taiwan and George Grant Hoag Professor of Biophysical Chemistry at the California Institute of Technology. He received his BS (1957) and PhD (1961) from UC Berkeley in microwave and far-infrared spectroscopy. He used these spectroscopic methods to work out the 3D structure of molecules in the gas phase. He then did an NSF Postdoctoral Fellowship (1960-61) at Harvard University where he did some of the first NMR experiments of complex molecules in a molecular beam with Norman Ramsey (who won the 1989 Nobel Prize in Physics "for the invention of the separated oscillatory fields method and its use in the hydrogen maser and other atomic clocks"). He currently works on the structure and function of membrane proteins, particularly those that participate in the transport of electrons, ions, sugars, and other substrates that are essential to the life of a cell across the cell membrane.
