Wouter Berends (1914-1990) studied chemistry at the University of Utrecht, passed his BA degree in 1936 and his MA in 1939. That year he was appointed assistant in organic chemistry and biochemistry in the laboratory of Prof Kögl. In April 1941 he was employed at TNO (Organization for applied scientific research) to conduct biochemical and microbiological research for public nutrition. From January 1952 he worked for the Royal Dutch Yeast- and Liquor works in Delft, where he was head of Research. He made important contributions in the biochemical research on antibiotics, such as penicillin. In 1953 he was appointed prof in Biochemistry at the Delft University of Technology
