Virgil C. Boekelheide, July 28, 1919 - September 24, 2003. Professor of Chemistry. An organic chemist, Professor Broekelheide joined the Oregon faculty in 1960. In 1962, he became the first Oregonian elected to the National Academy of Sciences. Among the awards he received were a John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship in 1953, an Alfred P. Sloan Fellowship in 1958, a Fulbright Distinguished Professorship in 1972 and Alexander von Humboldt Awards in 1974 and 1982. Professor Boekelheide served as department head two separate times and was a productive researcher was honored with the Charles E. Johnson Memorial Award from the University of Oregon in 1991.
