The Deutsche Biographie claims that Friedrich Hofmann (1660-1742) exerted a "formative influence" on Nicolai. His thesis defense, however, was 3 years after Hoffmann's death (1745), and the online version at the BSB does not mention who sponsored his thesis. Nicolai started his study in Halle in 1740, so there was a 2 year overlap with Hoffmann
