Julien Hoste received his PhD degree from Ghent University (UGent) in Belgium. He started his career at UGent in 1946 as an Assistant at the Laboratory of Analytical Chemistry, where in 1958 he became Associate Professor and Director/Head of Service. He was promoted to Senior Full Professor in 1962. He served UGent first as the Secretary and then as the Dean of the Faculty of Sciences. In subsequent years he became Rector and Vice-Rector of UGent. He retired in 1986. Professor Hoste was President of various Belgian and Flemish institutions for the promotion of scientific research, notably with those related to nuclear sciences and energy. He received several national and civic awards for his contribution to science as well as the society at large.
