Father of the Indian dyestuff industry. Co-discoverer of the Baker - Venkataraman transformation (reaction of 2-acetoxyacetophenones with bases to form 1,3-diketones). First Indian Director of the National Chemical Laboratory, Pune.

Noted for research into lac pigments, isolation and elucidation of the structures of natural flavones, isoflavones and anthraquinones, the development of a useful method for the oxidative conversion of o- hydroxychalcones to flavones and flavonols using SeO2 or alkaline H2O2, the development of a high-yield synthesis of isoflavones from o-hydroxydesoxybenzoins under very mild conditions, etc.
