DOI: 10.1017/S0016756800042606 By the time I took my Ph.D. at Rothamsted, where I worked on the chemistry of humus, I had a grasp of colloid chemistry and of some applications in soil science; but the subjects of soil formation and development were practically unknown to me. With this background I traveled to Zurich. There I found colloid chemistry to my heart's content and, withal, a magical bonus, the teaching of soil science by Georg Wiegner. Thus through Wiegner I came to know of Dokuchaev and the other great Russians. Soil geography now had meaning. The exchange complex was clearly the chief link between the geographical and the chemical aspects of soil.
