Possui graduação em Licenciatura Química pela Fundação Universidade Regional de Blumenau (1974), mestrado em Química pela Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (1980) e doutorado em Química Inorgânica - Ruhr Universität Bochum (1983). Realizou estágio Pós-Doc na Ruhr Universität Bochum em 1987-1988 no Grupo de Pesquisas do Prof. Karl Wieghardt. Desde 1997 é professor titular do Departamento de Química da Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina. Desde maio de 2008 é membro titular da Academia Brasileira de Ciências . Em maio de 2010 foi admitido na Classe de Comendador da Ordem nacional do Mérito Científico.Tem experiência nas áreas de Química Orgânica e Inorgância, com ênfase em síntese de Modelos Bioinspirados e suas aplicações em catalise de substratos modelos do DNA. Consequentemente as pesquisas estão relacionadas com o efeito citotóxico em células tumorais das novas drogas geradas.
