Professor Herbert Edward Street, Professor of Botany at the University of Leicester, U.K. died from a heart attack on December 4, 1977 at the age of 64. His sudden death is a great loss to Botanical Science and particularly to the field of Plant Tissue Culture. Professor Street started his career as a pharmacist, but soon switched to plant physiology and held Lectureships in Botany at the Universities of Nottingham and Manchester. In 1954 he was appointed to the Chair of Botany at the University College of Swansea. In that position he played an important role in the expansion of teaching and research in the Biological Sciences. In 1967 he was persuaded to take up a similar role at Leicester when he was appointed Professor of Botany and First Chairman of the newly formed School of Biological Sciences. The present high reputation of biological teaching and research at Leicester is largely due to his efforts.
Although Professor Street's early research was concerned with aspects of nitrogen metabolism of whole plants he soon turned to problems associated with plant tissue culture a subject in which he became an expert. For many years he and his research group effectively employed excised root cultures to tackle a wide range of topics including nutrition, biochemistry, growth and morphogenesis.
