Robert W. Vaughan was a professor of chemical engineering at Caltech. He died at the age of 38 in a disastrous airplane crash in Chicago.

He had just begun to make many contributions to solid state NMR in the few years before his untimely death.

He was a native of McAlester, Oklahoma, and he obtained the bachelors degree at the University of Oklahoma, and then obtained the Ph.D. at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, where he did his thesis work under the direction of Harry Drickhamer.

He worked as postdoctoral fellow at JPL before joining the faculty at Caltech.
