Newcomer joined the Department of Biochemistry at Vanderbilt in 1989 as Assistant Professor and rose rapidly to become Professor in 1999. She had received her Ph.D. at Rice in crystallography with Quiocho. She worked with Wayne Anderson to establish the Vanderbilt crystallography laboratory and undertook several structural studies including approaches to the structure and function of retinol binding proteins with Dave Ong and others. In 2002, she accepted a position at Louisiana State University at Baton Rouge.
