Carl Benda stammte aus einer weitgehend assimilierten jüdischen Familie und hatte in Heidelberg, Wien, Paris sowie in Berlin studiert. Nach der Promotion 1880 wurde er Assistent im Pathologischen Institut in Halle (Direktor: Prof. Theodor Ackermann) sowie später in Göttingen (Direktor: Prof. Johannes Orth).
