John A Timney was born in Middlesbrough, UK, but moved to Australia for 8 years until returning in 1972. Three years as an undergraduate at Newcastle University were followed by a further three under Prof Jim Turner doing a PhD. When Jim moved to Nottingham in early 1979, John started looking outside organometallic photochemistry for things to do and moved into teaching. Now, coming to the end of an interesting career, he works for INTO Newcastle University as Academic Director.
