Harold B. Pierce was a soft-spoken, serious individual with a quiet sense of humor and a tremendous feeling of dedication to his research, to students and their problems, and to the University of Vermont College of Medicine.
His accomplishments were unusual considering that he was afflicted with crippling arthritis for a major portion of his lifetime. His research, broadly covering nutrition and physiological chemistry, included the assessment of vitamin A and ascorbic acid deficiencies in man, studies on in testinal secretion and on the absorption and utilization of carbohydrates.
Dr. Pierce was born October 15, 1894 in Kansas City, Missouri, and received his bachelor's degree from the Massachusetts Agricultural College in 1917, his M.S. from Penn State in 1921 and his Ph.D. from the University of Rochester in 1928.
