Ludwig Carius war 1829 in Barbis/Harz als Pfarrerssohn geboren und hatte schon mit neun Jahren seine Eltern verloren.
Bei einem Freund der Familie in Goslar erzogen, trat er dort eine Apothekerlehre an und arbeitete später in einem kleinen pharmazeutischen Labor. Mit Privatunterricht verdiente er sich Geld zum Studium und holte das Abitur nach.
