René van Grieken started his education in the late sixties at the University of Ghent in Belgium, where he obtained his MSc and PhD degrees in chemistry. During 1972–1973 he acted as visiting professor in the Department of Oceanography at Florida State University in the USA. Since 1973 he has been professor of analytical and environmental chemistry at the University of Antwerp in Belgium. In 1985 he was promoted to full professor. He co-founded the Micro and Trace Analysis Center (MiTAC) in the Department of Chemistry, and is still the director of the center. MiTAC has about 70 researchers researching in various departments and he leads the environmental analysis group (accredited as a university excellence center) with about 15-20 full-time researchers.
