"Milon Sprecher"

Milon Sprecher Was born in Vienna, Austria, in 1929, and fled to England in 1939 where he received his High-School education. He reached the United States in January 1945, where he commenced his University Education, receiving his B.A. in 1947, his M.A. in 1949, and his Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from Columbia University, New York, in 1953. His Doctoral research in the area of mechanisms of Organic Reactions was performed under the direction of Prof. William Doering.
His Post-Doctoral appointment was in the Department of Biochemistry, of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Collumbia University, where (in 1953 -5) he engaged in the elucidation of the Shikimic Acid pathway of the biosynthesis of aromatic amino acids, In 1955 he arrived in Israel to found the Department of Chemistry at Bar-Ilan University. From the autumn of 1960 to the spring of 1964, he returned to the Dept. of Biochemistry at P&S of Columbia University, and, inter alia performed the pioneering research on the stereochemistry of B12 catalyzed biochemical rearrangements.
He returned to Israel in 1964 where he continued the development of the Dept. of Chem. of Bar-Ilan University, as well as assisting in setting up the Organic Chemistry Section of the Department at Tel-Aviv University. His research interests remained in the area of the mechanisms of organic reactions, and extended to organophosphorous, and lately, organosulfur chemistry.
He has served as Dean of the Faculty of Natural Sciences as well as Rector of Bar-Ilan University
