Voorhees, agricultural chemist, researcher, and teacher, was born in Mine Brook (Somerset County), N.J., June 22, 1856, in a family that emigrated from Netherlands and settled on Long Island in the seventeenth century.
He attended Rutgers College where he received his A.B. degree in 1881 and M.A. in 1884. During these years he worked for the agricultural chemist Wilbur Atwater at Wesleyan University, then returned to Rutgers to work as assistant chemist for George H. Cook, director of the New Jersey State Experiment Station. In 1888 he became chief chemist, and in 1890 professor of agriculture.
