Defends his thesis at the Collège de France in 1908 ("Les terrains primaires du Morvan et de la Loire"), under the supervision of Ferdinand Fouqué. Named Maître de Conférence at the Sorbonne in 1913, and Professor in 1936, he is forced to temporarily leave his position because of antisemitic laws enacted during the German occupation (Albert de Lapparent will substitute for him until 1942), and will return after the Liberation. He retires in 1946.
