He graduates from the Paris Polytechnique school in 1831, where Fourier, Arago, and Cauchy were teaching at the time. After graduation, he embarks on a career as a naval officer. Collects scientific data while traveling. The first scientific work, done with his brother Louis, is in the field of botany and published in 1835 as "Essai géométrique sur la symétrie des feuilles curvisériées et rectisériées".
