Jordan was Professor of Bacteriology at Chicago for nearly his entire career. He wrote a textbook in 1908 that became a standard on bacteriology; it continued long after his death into 22 editions. He also studied many bacterial and viral diseases and their relation to public health. He wrote the then-definitive account of the epidemiology of the 1918 influenza pandemic for the AMA in 1927. Served as President of the American Society of Bacteriology in 1905.
