Professor Arthur T. Slater - Hammel , born on September 11 , 1911 , in Cleveland , Ohio , received his A.B. degree in 1938 from Oberlin College , and a year later his A.M. degree from the same institution . In 1947 he was awarded the Ph.D. degree from The State University of Iowa .
