John E . Gibson was born in Providence , R . I . , on June 11, 1926. He received the B.S.E.E. degree from the University of Rhode Island (1950) and the M.S.E.E. and Ph.D. degrees from Yale University (1952 and 1956, respectively). As an engineering educator, he was appointed Instructor of Electrical Engineering, Yale University (1952); Assistant Professor, Yale (1956) ; Associate Professor, Purdue University (1957) ; Professor, Purdue (1960). Most recent appointments include those of founding Dean of Engineering at Oakland University (1965); John F. Dodge Professor, Oakland (1972); Dean of Engineering and Applied Science and Commonwealth Professor at the University of Virginia (1973 to present).
